Best Time to Surf in El Palmar: Waves, Atmosphere, and Type of Trip
There is no single best time to surf in El Palmar. What there are, however, are seasons that better match what you are looking for: more consistent waves, fewer people in the water, better weather, or a specific atmosphere.
This guide helps you compare the options and choose wisely.
How the Waves in El Palmar Behave Throughout the Year
El Palmar receives Atlantic swell for much of the year, but the frequency, size, and quality of the waves change significantly from one season to another.
- Spring is a transitional season. Swells still arrive fairly often, but the size is usually manageable. For intermediate surfers or people who are just starting out, April, May, and June offer an appealing balance between enough waves and a less demanding setting.
- In summer, the waves are smaller. There are flat days, but when some swell comes through, it is usually mellow and accessible, which makes it a valid window for getting started or simply enjoying the surf without too much pressure.
- From September onward, the ocean starts to pick up again. More consistent swells start to arrive, the water is still warm, and the atmosphere is calmer than in August. Autumn is when many people believe El Palmar offers its best balance between wave quality and overall travel experience.

Seasonal Comparison: Waves, Weather, and Atmosphere
Spring (April–June)
Waves arrive with some regularity, although with less power than in the colder months. The water starts to warm up and the weather is pleasant without the intense heat of summer. It is a time with fewer tourists, which is noticeable both on the beach and in the town’s overall atmosphere.
For those looking to learn or consolidate their level, spring is usually one of the best windows. There are enough waves to practice, the setting is not overcrowded, and the experience feels calmer.
At Nexo, this season includes retreats that combine surfing with yoga, making the most of that slower rhythm.
Summer (July–August)
It is the busiest time of year. The atmosphere is social, there is plenty going on around you, and the beach fills up. The waves, on the other hand, are smaller.
Summer makes sense if what you are after is more of a holiday experience: sun, beach, and contact with surfing without everything revolving around it. For a first introduction or for coming with friends without pressure, it can work well.
At Nexo, the summer program leaves afternoons and evenings free, adapting to that more open rhythm.
Autumn (September–November)
From September onward, the ocean starts to pick up again. More consistent swells begin to arrive, the water is still warm from summer, and the atmosphere is calmer than in August.
Many people consider it the best time to surf in El Palmar if you already have some experience and want to improve.
October and November can bring very good days, with quality waves and fewer people in the lineup.
At Nexo, we run surfcamps from April to November, with programs adapted to each part of the year.

What Does Not Change with the Season
Regardless of when you come, some things remain true. El Palmar has a sandy bottom, which makes it safer than other spots with rock bottoms. And the experience does not depend only on the waves, but also on how well the trip is organized.
A good surfcamp adapts the program to the conditions of each day. If the sea does not cooperate, there are alternatives: theory, video analysis, surfskate, mobility work. That makes the week worthwhile even if not every day is perfect for surfing.
