When to go to a surfcamp in El Palmar: which season suits you best
One of the questions we often get is when the best time is to come to a surfcamp like ours. There is no single best time of year to do a surfcamp in El Palmar. The useful answer is not about choosing “the best season” in general, but about understanding what suits you best depending on your level, the atmosphere you are looking for, and the way you want to experience those days.
El Palmar has waves for much of the year, but the experience is not the same in April, August, or November. That is why at Nexo we adapt the program according to the season:
- Spring (April to June) is usually a very good fit if you are coming for the first time and are looking for a balance between pleasant weather, less intensity than in peak summer, and an experience that is easier to take in. That is why we complement the experience with yoga retreats.
- Summer (July and August) usually makes more sense if you prioritize holidays, warm weather, a social atmosphere, and a gentle first introduction. During the summer period, we keep afternoons and evenings free.
- Autumn (September and October) is a very good option if you want to combine a good atmosphere, more focus on surfing, and less of a high-season feeling. September is considered mid surf season, as the waves continue through the end of the month and into early October. In autumn, we focus on surfing by organizing intensive clinics for more advanced levels.
If you are coming to start from scratch, April, May, June, and part of September usually make it easier
If it is your first time, it usually does not help to come at the most obvious moment, but at the kindest one. And for many people, that time is usually between April and June, or also in September, when the trip still feels comfortable but no longer has the more intense energy of peak summer.
Why does that time frame usually work so well? Because it brings together several things that matter quite a lot when you are starting out:
- Pleasant temperatures.
- A clearer feeling of a relaxed getaway.
- Less social pressure than in the middle of August.
- An experience that is easier to process if you still do not really know how a surfcamp works.
From our experience in El Palmar, these dates usually help you ease into the rhythm of surfing and of the trip itself. Not because there is a “perfect” season for learning, or because every day will be the same, but because the overall context tends to support people who are discovering this experience for the first time.
There is one important idea here: if you have never done one before, you are not only choosing a date. You are also deciding whether this way of travelling suits you. That is why it is worth understanding well what a surfcamp is before booking.
In our case, you are not just coming for a lesson: you are coming to spend several days with a routine, a progression, accommodation, and an environment designed for learning and enjoying yourself without having to organise everything on your own.

If you are looking for atmosphere and a more social experience, July and August are your clearest choice
Summer is sometimes talked about as if it were a less interesting option for surfing. We do not see it that way. It simply responds to a different intention.
July and August usually make a lot of sense if you feel like an active getaway, warm weather, the beach, holidays, and a more lively experience. It is the season that fits best if you are coming with friends, if you want to combine surfing with rest and a social plan, or if you are more drawn to a week with summer energy than to a getaway focused only on progression.
Also, for many people, summer is a very natural way to enter this world. Not because it is better for everyone, but because it makes the trip easier to imagine and more appealing to book.
Summer tends to suit you especially well if you are looking for something like this:
- Your first surfing experience during the holidays.
- A more social trip.
- A week with atmosphere.
- A plan that mixes the sea, rest, and life around it.
That said, it is worth being honest here too: if what you want is to come with a strong focus on progression, silence, and total concentration, other dates will probably suit you better. Not because summer does not work, but because it offers a different kind of experience.
At Nexo, summer is not presented as “the default season”, but as a different way of experiencing the surfcamp: more open, more social, and more connected to the feeling of being on holiday.
If you already have a foundation and want to improve, September to November often makes a lot of sense
When you have surfed before and you are coming with a real desire to improve, the decision changes quite a lot. What tends to help you is no longer just “good weather”, but a more specific combination: more focus, less noise, and a feeling that the trip truly revolves around surfing.
That is where September, October, and November often become a very interesting window in El Palmar. On the one hand, you still get an enjoyable travel experience. On the other hand, the atmosphere changes, and the trip usually feels less shaped by the more holiday-driven logic of summer and more by the desire to surf with intention.
That is why, if you are coming to improve, autumn often makes a lot of sense. It is a season that, for many adults, strikes a very good balance between three things:
- You still enjoy the trip a lot.
- There is less of a peak-season feeling.
- The focus on surfing tends to appear more naturally.
Also, at Nexo, this is precisely one of the seasons that makes the most sense for this kind of profile.
If you are looking for a multi-day experience with structure, shared living, and guidance, that is a fairly clear clue as to the kind of format that best fits this way of travelling.
If you are at that point, this is where our surfcamp in El Palmar fits naturally: not only because you come to the destination, but because of how you experience the week once you are here.

To make a good decision, think like this: season, level, and type of week
If you want to reduce all of this to a simple decision, here is the summary:
Choose spring (April–June) if you want to start more calmly, with good weather and a more balanced experience.
Choose summer (July–August) if you prioritise holidays, atmosphere, and a gentle first experience.
Choose autumn (September–November) if you want a good middle ground between an enjoyable trip and more focus on surfing.
And if you already have dates in mind, do not rely only on a general idea of the season. A few days before your trip, you can check the AEMET beach forecast for El Palmar to arrive with a useful and realistic reference close to the date, without obsessing over predicting everything.
It may also help to read how to prepare for your first surfcamp if what is holding you back is not so much the season as the normal doubts that come with a first time.
What works best is not the perfect season, but the one that makes the most sense for you
At Nexo, this is how we see it: it is not about getting a “mythical” season right, but about choosing the week that suits you best right now.
Some people come in May because they want to start without pressure, some prefer August because they want holidays, surfing, and atmosphere, and others wait until October or November because what they really want is to improve with more focus.
